Production- Location and Props/Costumes (music video)

Image
Location Scouting: Above are some photos of the locations we scouted out while planning out the settings and shot list. The places include a tree on the field Infront of the 1500s building, the entrance of MSD by the main stairwell, and an inspirational quote on a wall outside of the 100s building.  Props/Costumes:  Costumes are simple and casual, such as hoodies, sweatpants, and slides. This keeps the focus on emotion rather than appearance. The muted color palette helps create a nostalgic and slightly sad mood. For props we used an iPhone and a letter.

Production- Roles (music video)

Maya: Director Briana: Editor Zander: Actor Evangeline: Editor My Roles and Responsibilities in the group: As the editor, I assemble the footage, choose transitions, and control the pacing and timing to match the song’s mood and beat. I also work on filtering the clips to add cinematic lighting, getting rid of background noise, and overlaying the actual song into the video. Editing takes time and it's easy to miss certain things, so it's important that I'm diligent and careful while working my way through the clips.

Planning- Shot list & Production Schedule (music video)

Image
Shot List/Storyline:  Production Schedule: Our production schedule is planned to be efficient. Filming will take place around half of 8th period each burgundy day until filming was complete. The video will be edited after everything's filming, with time set aside to experiment with pacing and shot order to best match the song’s rhythm.

Planning- Target Audience (music video)

Target Audience: The target audience for our music video is mainly teenagers and young adults , especially those who enjoy indie, alternative, or rock music. The audience is likely to understand the themes of nostalgia, identity, and emotional disconnection, which are relatable experiences during adolescence and early adulthood. Audience positioning is created through the use of close ups and medium shots , which place the viewers close to the character, not just physically, but also emotionally. This encourages empathy and makes the audience feel like they are experiencing the emotions alongside the character. The lack of dialogue also allows viewers to project their own feelings onto the narrative. We also appeal to this audience by using realistic settings, casual costumes, and natural lighting , which makes the video feel authentic rather than staged. This helps the audience feel represented and understood, which is important in media products.

Planning- Concept and Storyline (music video)

Concept & Storyline:  My music video for “Kids” by Current Joys focuses on the idea of growing up and feeling emotionally disconnected from your past . The concept is simple but meaningful. The story follows one main character who is physically present in everyday spaces but emotionally distant, reflecting on childhood. The narrative is not told through dialogue, but through visual storytelling , body language, and symbolism. The storyline is intentionally subtle. Instead of a clear beginning, middle, and end, the video feels more like a series of moments or memories , which fits the indie genre. This aligns with the song’s vibe and allows the audience to interpret the meaning for themselves. The use of repetition in actions and locations helps reinforce the theme of being stuck in the past. We chose this concept because indie music videos often prioritize mood and emotion over performance . By focusing on sadness and nostalgia, our video stays true to genre conventions whil...

Research- Case Study (music video)

Case Study:   “Fluorescent Adolescent” by Arctic Monkeys is an example of a  music video that relates the genre of indie/alternative rock. Narrative and story The music video follows a group of clowns causing chaos in the streets. At first, this seems random, but the clowns represent childhood. Seeing them act angry and violent shows how growing up can feel frustrating and disappointing. This is common in indie and alternative music videos, where the story is not always literal but is meant to make the audience think and feel something deeper. Camera conventions The camera work is mostly handheld , creating a raw and unstable feel. Medium shots and close ups are used to capture emotion and tension, while wider shots show isolation and chaos within the group. This handheld, documentary-like style is common in indie/alt music videos because it feels realistic and emotionally intense rather than staged. Mise-en-scène Mise en scène plays a major role in the video. The c...

Research- Follow/Challenge Conventions (music video)

Follow/Challenge Conventions: How our music video uses these conventions                                                                                          Our music video intentionally uses the sad and disconnected tone because it matches both the lyrics and mood of the song. We show the character as emotionally distant to represent feelings of nostalgia, confusion, and the difficulty of growing up. By leaning into this convention, our video stays authentic to the genre and allows the audience to emotionally connect with the character. Rather than challenging this representation, we use it purposefully to communicate the theme of losing innocence and struggling with identity. Why this representation is effective This representation works well because it sp...

Research- Representations and Stereotypes (music video)

Representations & Stereotypes: Typical representations                                                                                                                                  A common representation is the sad or disconnected young person , usually shown alone or separated from others even when people are physically nearby. The character often appears quiet, reflective, or emotionally distant. Settings like empty streets, bedrooms, or nighttime locations are used to visually show loneliness and internal struggle. These representations reflect how many teenagers and young adults actually feel, making the genre relatable and honest rather than dramatic or e...

Research- Codes and Conventions (music video)

Codes & Conventions: Camera conventions                                                                                                                                                 A  common convention is handheld camera or slightly unstable movement because it feels natural and human. Shots are often medium shots and close ups so the audience can read emotion without needing lots of dialogue. Wide shots are used too, but usually to show loneliness or distance. Mise-en-scene conventions      The locations are 'normal places' like school hallways, the courtyard, or a field. Costumes are casual, ...
